The Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) is conducting a study focused on the state sales tax and the costs incurred by businesses in collecting it. This presents an opportunity for NFIB members in the retail sector to influence public policy affecting their operations.

NFIB has been advocating for the restoration of vendors' compensation, a practice initiated in 1947 but discontinued in 2000 due to a budget shortfall. The compensation was briefly reinstated in 2022 for one year. According to an NFIB Member Ballot, "72% of NFIB members said Tennessee should compensate retailers permanently to help defray costs associated with collecting and remitting the sales tax to the state." They emphasize that "Tennessee should acknowledge that retailers are unpaid sales tax collectors."

Retailers are encouraged to participate in TACIR's confidential study to voice their perspectives.
