The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) is observing Weights and Measures Week from March 1 to March 7, 2025. This year's theme, "Building a Lasting Legacy," underscores TDA's commitment to maintaining high standards and embracing new technologies in weights and measures.
Commissioner Charlie Hatcher, D.V.M., highlighted the importance of the work done by weights and measures inspectors. “Consumers depend on weights and measures inspectors whose work protects them in ways they may not realize,” he stated. He emphasized that nearly all consumer goods are measured or weighed before purchase, ensuring that customers receive the correct quantity at the advertised price.
TDA inspectors carry out UPC price verification scanner inspections and review signage, advertisements, and price calculations at retail locations. Their efforts help prevent overcharges and foster consumer trust in the marketplace. Additionally, these inspectors test various scales used in grocery stores, gas stations, airports, and for trucks.
Within the Consumer and Industry Services Division is the Weights and Measures Section which includes the Johnson Metrology Laboratory. This facility maintains Tennessee's primary standards for mass and volume while providing calibration services with advanced equipment.
Weights and Measures Week commemorates the signing of the first U.S. weights and measures law on March 2, 1799. Tennessee participates as a member of the National Conference on Weights and Measures.
