NFIB is calling on its retail industry members in Tennessee to participate in shaping public policy by responding to a survey on sales tax collections conducted by the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR). This survey aims to assess the costs borne by businesses in collecting state sales tax.

A key issue under consideration is the restoration of vendors' compensation. The compensation program began in 1947 but was halted in 2000 due to a budget shortfall. It was temporarily reinstated in 2022 for a single year only. NFIB has been advocating for the program's restoration and permanence.

According to a Member Ballot, 72% of NFIB members believe that Tennessee should offer permanent compensation to retailers for the expenses incurred when collecting and forwarding sales tax to state authorities. The organization emphasizes that "Tennessee should acknowledge that retailers are unpaid sales tax collectors."

The confidential survey by TACIR is available for completion.
