At a recent meeting of the Unemployment Compensation Advisory Council, stakeholders were briefed on the current status of unemployment insurance in Tennessee. A significant update was shared regarding the state's Unemployment Insurance Tax System, which is set to transition on May 27.

The Department of Labor & Workforce Development has extended an invitation to interested members of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) to join their technical team for this transition. The session will be held live in Nashville at Metrocenter or remotely on Monday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants can choose to attend for as long as their schedules permit. Those interested are encouraged to contact State Director Jim Brown by Friday, March 7, for further details.

The state’s unemployment insurance trust fund currently holds a balance of $1.4 billion and maintains tax rates at their lowest level, classified under Table 6.

In response to last year’s flooding in northeast Tennessee, nearly 3,000 Disaster Unemployment Assistance claims have been filed. Of these claims, more than 400 individuals continue to receive assistance until the program concludes on April 5. Meanwhile, 644 claims have been identified and removed from the system due to being fraudulent or erroneous.
