A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to Strayer University-Knoxville regarding the list of all students admitted to the school for the 2024-25 academic year on December 12, 2024.

The request was made by Volunteer State News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs. As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability in public institutions, we sought access to these records under the Tennessee Open Records Act, §10-7-503 et seq.

Specifically, we requested an electronic format list of names of all students admitted to the school for the upcoming academic year. The desired fields included student name, home zip/hometown, and graduated high school name.

We believe that access to such public records is essential for us at Volunteer State News to fulfill our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we asserted our eligibility for a fee waiver as media professionals.
