A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to Meharry Medical College concerning the admission records for the 2024-25 school year on December 12, 2024.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Volunteer State News requested a list of all students admitted to the college for the upcoming academic year. The specific details sought include each student's name, home zip code or hometown, and their graduated high school name.
The request was made under the Tennessee Open Records Act, §10-7-503 et seq., with a preference for receiving the data in an electronic format. As a media organization, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In line with our role in disseminating information to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional. We are awaiting a response from Meharry Medical College regarding this request.
