The Lee University men's soccer team tallied three second-half goals on its way to a 3-0 Gulf South Conference win over Spring Hill College Sunday afternoon at Ray Conn Sports Complex. The Flames improved to 7-2-2 overall and are now 5-2-1 in league play.
Jeremy Bischoff cracked the scoreboard in the 57th minute. The eventual game-winner was headed in by Bischoff off an Eemeli Makela free kick from just outside the box. Makela would add an insurance goal in the 72nd minute with a penalty kick that was set up by Ryan Chouyouti drawing a foul inside the penalty area.
With a little under nine minutes remaining, Mattia Balzano supplied the final margin with his second goal of the season. Fabian Navarro was credited with the assist.
Head Coach Derek Potteiger was really pleased with the win. "I was really proud of the energy the guys brought forth from the beginning. Spring Hill is a team that is as competitive as they come. They want to battle for every ball and moment. We managed the first half well and then our depth came into play in the second half. In soccer once you get one, then you get a second and then things just open up."
The Flames outshot Spring Hill (4-5-3, 2-3-3 GSC) 15-14 and put six shots on goal to five for the Badgers. Lee held a 7-5 advantage in the first 45 minutes, but the visitors from Mobile, Alabama, edged the Flames 9-8 in the final period. Lee registered five corner kicks to four for Spring Hill.
Roel Martinez posted five saves, all in the second half, to record the shutout win. Gino Gandzior turned aside three shots in the loss.
