A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to Welch College concerning the list of students admitted for the 2024-25 academic year on December 12, 2024.
The request, made by Volunteer State News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, seeks access to specific records under the Tennessee Open Records Act, §10-7-503 et seq. The requested information includes student names, their home zip codes or hometowns, and the names of their graduated high schools.
As a news organization committed to transparency and accountability in public institutions, we at Volunteer State News believe that access to such public records is crucial in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. This includes not only holding public institutions accountable but also providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we consider ourselves eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
