A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to Tennessee State University on December 12, 2024, by Volunteer State News. The request pertains to the list of all students admitted to the university for the academic year 2024-25.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Volunteer State News requested specific details under the Tennessee Open Records Act, §10-7-503 et seq. The information sought includes each admitted student's name, home zip code or hometown, and their graduated high school name.
We believe that access to public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we requested a fee waiver for this information.
We are awaiting a response from Tennessee State University regarding this matter.
