Tennessee State University Women's basketball Falls in OVC First Round 71-64 to SIUE

Gia Adams, Saniah Parker and Erica Haynes-Overton combined to score 49 of Tennessee State's 64 total points, but the Lady Tigers fell to the SIUE Cougars 71-64 in the first round of the OVC Tournament at Ford Center Wednesday.

Adams led the Lady Tigers (11-18) with 21 points and four assists. Parker added 17 points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Haynes-Overton helped out with 11 points and two steals.

Led by Lyric Cole's three offensive rebounds, Tennessee State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.

Tennessee State did a great job disrupting SIUE shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Parker's four rejections led the way individually for the Lady Tigers.

How It Happened

Tennessee State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-17 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 41-27 halftime deficit.

After intermission, Tennessee State cut its deficit to 47-34 before going on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 47-40 with 4:55 to go in the third. SIUE countered and stretched its lead to 56-46 heading into the fourth. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 19 points in the paint.

Tennessee State narrowed its deficit to 66-58 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Parker's three, to shrink the deficit to 66-63 with 2:32 to go in the contest. SIUE responded and outscored the Lady Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-64. Tennessee State took advantage of three SIUE turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
