SRO online class prepares parents for teen drivers

Teen drivers ages 16-19 are three times more likely to be killed in a crash than drivers age 20 and older, reported the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Parents can help prevent their children from crashes by teaching them to be responsible drivers, said School Resource Officer Chad Dodson, who teaches the Defense Response Improving Vehicle Education class to teens.

Dodson is offering a free two-hour online class for parents Friday nights Feb. 3, April 21 and May 19. Topics include ground rules, first road trip and defensive driving.

“We want to give parents all the resources we can to teach their children to be safe drivers,” Dodson said.

The video he uses in the class reports 17 teens lose their lives from crashes daily in the U.S and 77 percent of the crashes involve “avoidable driver errors.”

Parents interested in taking the class this Friday should email Dodson at cdodson@rcsotn.org for a registration form or call him with questions at 615-396-7342.
