Trevecca Nazarene University Men's Basketball Crosstown Rival Belmont Tops Trojans

The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (1-6, 0-2 Great Midwest) lost to Belmont University (5-4, 1-1 MVC) in an exhibition game on Tuesday night and fell 83-53.

THE SERIES

The Trojans are 21-47 all-time against Belmont University. The former NAIA rivals are meeting for the seventh time since Belmont moved to Division 1.

THE FLOW

Belmont came out with a strong push and jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Then the Trojans fought back with an 8-3 run led by a pair of Trojan three-pointers to cut their deficit to 13-10. Later in the half, the Trojans took the lead on an 8-0 run powered by a pair of Drew Blackston three-pointers which made it 18-17 with 11 minutes left in the first half. Belmont responded with a solid push to retake the lead and went into halftime up 46-26.

Caleb Terry scored the Trojan's first two buckets of the second half. Then at 14:46, Jaden Smallwood made a layup and was fouled. He made the ensuing free throw. Later in the half, the Trojans went on a 14-4 run to cut their deficit to 64-47 when Zeke Grier, Isaiah Davis, Connor Martin, and Jake Mulder made three-pointers. But Belmont fought back and put the game out of reach for the Trojans.

THE PLAYERS

Caleb Terry led the Trojans with eight points and five rebounds. Jaden Smallwood also had five points with two rebounds. 

THE TEAMS

The Trojans shot 40.4% (19-47) from the floor, 36% (9-25) from three-point range, and 86% (6-7) from the free-throw line. The Trojans outrebounded Belmont 35-28.

The Trojans will take a small break and will play next at Malone University (4-1, 1-0 Great Midwest) on December 17th at 2:00 PM.
