King University Tornado comeback falls short against LMU

The King University women's basketball team fell behind Lincoln Memorial University and Saturday. The Tornado fought back and pulled within two possessions in the final period, but their comeback fell short as the Railsplitters took the contest 60-53.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Period

  • The teams went back-and-forth in the early going as a Rikkelle Miller layup pulled King within 9-8 six minutes into the contest.
  • However, Lincoln Memorial scored six straight points before a Jordan Weir layup for the Tornado.
  • The Railsplitters answered with a bucket to take a 17-10 lead into the second period.
Second Period

  • The King deficit grew to 27-14 following a 7-0 Lincoln Memorial run midway through the period.
  • A basket by Brianna Dunbar and two free throws from Le'Aije Ellington cut into the Lincoln Memorial lead, but the Railsplitters held a 32-20 lead at the half.
Third Period

  • Consecutive baskets from Ashley Allen and Jada Campbell tried to get a Tornado run going, but the Railsplitters answered with a run.
  • Lincoln Memorial went on a 12-4 run, taking their largest lead of the game at 46-28, and held a 48-30 lead going to the fourth period.
Fourth Period

  • Tori Smiley started the final period with a triple to get the Tornado offense going.
  • A pair of Allen free throws started a 9-0 Tornado run.
  • Dunbar added a three-point play and later a layup to pull King within 50-43 with five minutes remaining.
  • A Dunbar three-point basket and an Ellington free throw cut the King deficit to 51-47 with three minutes remaining.
  • However, Lincoln Memorial responded with six straight points, extending their lead back to double digits as the Railsplitters held on for the 60-53 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Dunbar led King with 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the floor.
  • Allen followed with eight points and eight rebounds.
  • Jaelyn West chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.
FOR THE FOES

  • Saquita Joyner led Lincoln Memorial with 24 points and nine rebounds.
  • Alexa Smiddy followed with 17 points and five rebounds.
