U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) is one of the representatives encouraging Republicans and Democrats to come together as the new Congress.
Blackburn issued a statement:
“To persist with impeachment now, with just days to go in the current administration, will further divide Americans and exacerbate tensions. Moving forward, it is my sincere hope Congress will work on a bipartisan basis to restore the confidence of the American people in our elections and affirm our shared commitment to the rule of law.”
Voter integrity issues regarding the 2020 elections were some of the concerns that led to division and ultimately the Jan. 6 violence. President Donald Trump is blamed for inspiring the insurrection which sought to stop the certification of President-elect Joe Biden. This has been the basis of the argument leading to Trump's impeachment seven days before the inauguration.
Trump's political career is at stake and questions have arisen whether or not he would be allowed to run again in 2024 if he were removed from office.
WUSA reports that if Trump was removed by the 25th Amendment, he could run again because that does not disqualify him from running again.
However, if he is removed via an impeachment conviction, the answer gets a little more murky. Congress has the authority to disqualify someone from running for office.
In the past, there have been times that Congress has decided not to disqualify someone from office, so Trump’s ability to run in 2024 depends on if Congress decides to disqualify him or not.
