The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team swept a doubleheader against Southern Indiana on May 1 at Bettye Giles Field in Martin. The Skyhawks secured a walk-off win in game one, 4-3, and followed with a shutout victory, 1-0, in game two.
With the first win of the day, UT Martin clinched the number two seed for next week’s Ohio Valley Conference Championship in Peoria, Illinois. The team cannot finish lower than second place and could still share the regular-season title depending on other results. The victories also marked the first time since 2012 that UT Martin has achieved 20 wins in league play.
In game one, Kennedy Brown delivered a walk-off RBI single to secure the win for UT Martin. Earlier in that game, Brown had stolen home to put her team ahead. Kyrsten Brown contributed three hits and an RBI while Payton Harris earned the pitching win by recording the final two outs. Ashtyn Green started for UT Martin and Natalie Kreuziger pitched middle relief.
Game two remained scoreless until Ava Scott doubled and later scored on an infield single from Kyla Harley in the sixth inning. Harris pitched all seven innings for UT Martin, allowing only two hits while striking out six batters—a career high—for her shutout victory.
The Skyhawks will conclude their regular season as they seek a series sweep against Southern Indiana.
