The Trevecca Nazarene University men’s basketball team (1-12, 0-7 Great Midwest) hosted Walsh University (8-6, 5-2 Great Midwest) on Saturday afternoon and fell 71-54.

THE SERIES

Walsh has an all-time advantage against the Trojans with a 9-2 lead in the series. The Trojans won the last meeting 71-64 on January 27, 2022. 

THE FLOW

Walsh claimed an early 7-2 lead, but the Trojans tied it up following five straight points, including a three from Jake Mulder. The Trojans would take the lead after an 8-2 run, which made it 15-11 with 11:28 left in the half. However, Walsh responded, built a lead of their own with a big run, and would lead by as much as 13 points. The Trojan’s offense chipped away at the lead late and would go into halftime down 33-25.

Walsh’s offense extended their lead out of the break and would lead by as much as 19 points. The Trojans were put on their heels offensively. Then the Trojan’s offense got going as they cut their deficit to 50-45 with 9:17 left following a 15-1 run that included eight points from Elon Smallwood. Walsh responded in kind by scoring 14 straight points to build their lead back up. The Trojans chipped away at the deficit but ran out of time.

THE PLAYERS

Elon Smallwood led the Trojans with 18 points and four rebounds. Jose Waring had 12 points and four rebounds. Jake Mulder had 10 points.

THE TEAMS

The Trojans shot 38.9% (21-54) from the floor, 27.3% (6-22) from three-point range, and 85.7% (6-7) from the free-throw line.
