The Tennessee Farmers Cooperative Foundation released on May 11 a checklist to help farmers prepare for the upcoming hay season. The guidance emphasizes that advance preparation can prevent problems and keep operations running smoothly during this critical period.
Hay season is important for many agricultural producers, and unexpected equipment failures or supply shortages can cause costly delays. The foundation recommends that farmers take time before the busy season to perform maintenance, stock up on essential supplies, and review their storage plans.
The checklist includes several key steps: performing tractor and machinery maintenance such as checking fluids, filters, spark plugs, greasing equipment, and replacing worn parts; testing all machinery before use; stocking up on fuel, baling twine, shear pins, rake tines, gloves, masks and other personal gear; gathering supplementary tools like moisture testers or field repair kits; and preparing storage locations by clearing out old crops and planning space for new hay. The foundation also highlights the availability of specific equipment models at member Co-ops.
According to the official website, the Tennessee Farmers Cooperative Foundation obtains funding from Tennessee Farmers Cooperative profits as well as special initiatives such as annual auctions and knife sales. The organization focuses on developing future agricultural leaders while supporting local communities across all 95 counties in Tennessee through disaster assistance programs and faith-based initiatives. Its board of directors consists of leaders from both the cooperative itself and general managers from local cooperatives.
The foundation said that being prepared helps make hay season more efficient, safer, and more comfortable for everyone involved.
