United States Senator Bill Hagerty appeared on Varney & Co. on Fox Business on April 15 to discuss ongoing negotiations with Iran, market reactions to Middle East events, and efforts to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
Hagerty’s comments come at a time when U.S. foreign policy and domestic security funding are under close scrutiny. His remarks reflect ongoing debates about international relations and government operations.
Addressing the situation with Iran, Hagerty said, “We’ve never been able to believe a word they’ve said. This has been going on for decades, and they’ve consistently lied. They’ve consistently misrepresented their position. And I think you just have to step back and take a look at the cards that they hold.” He added that “the cards are all in President Trump’s hand,” referring to current U.S. negotiators involved in discussions with Iran.
On economic matters related to the Middle East crisis, Hagerty said, “I think it’s because they see this administration, the Trump administration, standing strong, standing firm. And again, the cards are all in our favor. This blockade is going to have dramatic results on the Iranian economy.”
Discussing funding for Homeland Security workers amid political disagreements in Congress, Hagerty said Democrats have subjected department employees “to massive pain” during government shutdowns: “It’s just a shame that Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are willing to hold them… as hostages for sheer politics.” He explained that Republicans plan to focus on a reconciliation package aimed at securing full funding for these departments through President Trump’s term.
Hagerty was elected as U.S. Senator from Tennessee according to the official website here. He serves on several Senate committees including Appropriations; Banking; Housing and Urban Affairs; Foreign Relations; and Rules and Administration according to his official biography. Raised in Sumner County where he earned Eagle Scout rank according to his office, he also volunteers with civic organizations as reported by his staff.
Hagerty maintains offices across Tennessee—including Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Jackson—and Washington D.C., providing constituent services throughout these locations according to his office.
