The Lincoln Memorial baseball team survived a late UVA Wise comeback attempt to win 9-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field.

The Railsplitters (14-6) led the Cavaliers (9-17) 8-0 after the first 2 innings, but UVA Wise used a 7-run 8th inning to make it a game late.

Both Andrew Keene and Ryan Kurth hit 2-run doubles, while Tyler Boyd knocked an RBI single to score Kurth in the 1st inning for a 5-spot in the opening frame for the hosts. Lincoln Memorial tacked on 3 runs in the 2nd on a Keene 2-run single and a Boyd RBI hit by pitch for the early 8 runs. Keene stole 3rd base and scored on a throwing error in the 6th inning for the Railsplitters’ 9th run of the game.

The visiting Cavaliers went for 7 runs in the 8th inning and were looking for another before getting thrown out at home plate after a single to left field to end the frame. David Brian Ellison shut it down in the 9th inning for the Railsplitters to earn save No. 3 for him on the year.

Layndon Carter threw 2.0 shutout innings with 2 strikeouts in relief to improve to 1-0 on the year. UVA Wise starter Eli Reece fell to 1-3 this season with the loss.

Lincoln Memorial plays a 3-game series at Anderson this weekend beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
